"Secrets feel like ruts in the road when you are trying to walk in the dark."
Jamie thinks her whole name - Esther James Atherton - is awkward and weird. She is 14 and why her name is Esther is just one of the many dangerous secrets swirling in her life.
Jamie is an introverted, artistic girl who has never been close to anyone except her big brother Lucas. Their parents are successful people who recently moved the family into a new, custom-built luxury home, yet they don't see the insecurity in their own daughter.
They also don't see their son getting snared into an underworld of drugs and dealers. Jamie does -- and as summer unravels Jamie tries to protect Lucas. This becomes more and more difficult as secrets build and threaten In her exploration of the countryside around her parents' new house. Jamie meets Cassie and Caleb, lively, interesting, and poor kids. For the first time in her life Jamie experiences what it's like to have real friends.
When Jamie shares her secrets about her brother, her family, and her weird name - Caleb tells Jamie there was a Queen Esther in the Bible. They find the story and read it. The story moves strongly inside Jamie.
The story of Queen Esther will give Jamie the wisdom and courage she will soon need when she must make a choice no kid should ever have to face. A crisis comes – and Jamie has to choose between being honest and being loyal.

Becoming Esther edition by MB Danielson Children eBooks
Becoming Esther is listed as a young adult novel, but I found it very interesting as a full fledged adult. MB Danielson's phrasing is beautiful and her characters come to life. I remember having some of the same emotions and feelings as a teenager. I was left wanting to see Jamie's drawings, they seemed so real. A number of pertinent issues are subtly covered such as getting along with people of different socio-economic groups, body image, the importance or non-importance of beauty on character, and the relationship between money and happiness. Jamie struggles with difficult choices and I was anxious to get to the end to see what decisions she made. This book is entertaining while having a serious subtext that young adults (and others) will find interesting and helpful. I highly recommend it.Product details

Becoming Esther edition by MB Danielson Children eBooks Reviews
I started this book one lazy morning and then looked up to find that it was already getting dark again. The wonderfully authentic and identifiable voice of the teenage narrator draws you in such that you want to take a seat right next to her, listen carefully to her story and give her a hug through the tough parts. This novel can really strike a chord with young adults who are often faced with very adult challenges, feelings and situations. And, as a 'not so young' adult myself, I was equally able to appreciate Esther, the wonderfully written characters that surround her, and the courageous path she forges in this excellent novel.
